Do everything possible to avoid lapses of integrity. Fuss less about occasional lapses of competence.
Relate to the Team as an Entity
It might sound a bit peculiar – to develop a relationship with the team as an entity – however, doing so is important and multipurpose. Consider it one part efficiency, one part equity, and one part identity. Some activities a leader does are simply better with the whole team at once such as communications, goal setting, welcoming new team members, and other types of networking. It is wildly more efficient and generally viewed as more equitable: no one feels that he or she are missing out on anything.
Other than for efficiency and equity, relating to the team as a whole creates a sense of team identity. Having that sense of team, of belonging, is a real pull for a lot of people going into the office. It also stimulates collaboration. Foster a spirit of fun and camaraderie. Have team learning events and learn with them! If you are swamped, it is okay to nominate a team event planner. Sam had one of those on her team years back: Carin loved coming up with creative ways to stimulate team spirit and she was great at it. When Sam first acquired the team as part of a large merger, they had the lowest morale in the whole division. Within six months their spirit was the envy of the whole floor thanks to Carin. As Sam says about that time, “I had the sense to recognize Carin’s potential, get out of the way, and let good things happen.”
